Review of Far and Away (1992) by Tim C — 09 Nov 2008
It felt like an elementary school telling of what it was like to be Irish in America in the midst of the Western expansion. Tom Cruise may be of Irish heritage, but he and the movie made the Irish look like walking cartoon characters.
Not to mention they could have really explored the reality of the time in both Ireland and America for the Irish- instead, they glossed it over like a history book glosses over a said "minority"'s contribution to American history.
Ron Howard has done better work, so to say it is a safe sophomoric film isn't too much of an insult. Oh, and Nicole Kidman- she was probably the only performance worth paying any attention to.
