Review of Far and Away (1992) by Fred J — 23 Aug 2009
Beautifully photographed. Not very well written. For example: Understanding the power of the Irish landlord, Joseph watches his family home burn as he continues his father's funeral, vowing later revenge.
Both that restraint and his sense of the perils of power disappear thereafter. This is just the key character/writing problem. So the characters lack life, though the pictures are top notch. (And there's really a lot of serendipity involved in advancing this luck-and-pluck plot.
).
