Review of Fantastic Four (2015) by James R — 10 Jan 2016
Sometimes you gotta take an L and this is one of them. Fantastic Four is a reboot of the series and once again Fox trying to take another swing at the comic property. The movie is a bit more darker than the previous version that was released in 2005.
Dr. Franklin Storm (Reg E. Cathey) recruits boy genius Reed Richards (Miles Teller) to help him complete a teleporter device that can transport someone to another dimension. The alternate dimension includes vast resources that can help save the Eart (yeah this is the plot).
Reed meets with the previous head of the project Victor Von Doom (Toby Kebbell), Storms adopted daughter Sue (Kate Mara), and also Storms hot headed son (that is in no way a scientist, but apparently builds stuff well?) Johnny (Michael B Jordan).
They successfully complete the project, but when they attempt to travel into the other dimension things don't go as planned. Oh and randomly Reeds friend Ben Grimm (Jamie Bell) comes along (which makes no god damn sense).
They all get messed up and awaken with powers. Everyone should know them by now. The movie then takes one of the weirdest turn of events by time jumping a year and the movie just falls flat. The first act is dare I say it.
..fantastic. It sets the characters up and you actually get a feel. Out of nowhere after the jump we learn about events that woulda been cool to see, and we get zero to no character development. Ben has become the Thing and is killing people for the military, Sue doesn't want to use her powers for the military, and Johnny basically is kinda just around? There was a lot of problems with the making of this film that are pretty public knowledge.
The director has disavowed himself from the film since the studio came in and changed his vision of it. There were a ton of reshoots and you can tell where they did them (Sue suddenly has a blond wig and Reed has facial hair in one scene then its gone its laughable).
The one year jump is just dumb and leaves so much development out. Oh and not to mention for a comic book adaptation there's only one action scene in the entire film! The last ten minutes of the film in fact.
The movie leaves it wide open for a sequel, but man do they need to just give this back to Marvel! Skip it not even worth a look.
