Review of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) by Lewis H — 24 Nov 2018
Is the crimes of grindelwald a bad movie? by any standard, I don't think so. the casting is alright, it had some ok visuals and scenes, and the acting wasn't terrible. however, the problem is that everything, and I mean EVERYTHING is just barely above mediocre. the scenes are grey and uninteresting, the actors are good sometimes and crap other times, the fantastic beasts are great but hardly have enough screen time, the villain is just a hipster neo nazi who looks right out of a charlottesville starbucks, and worst of all, the plot is boring, the scenes are boring, the action is boring, EVERYTHING, IS SO, DAMN, BORING! everything negative I just mentioned? boring! the good parts? shoved to the side so that we can have boring wizards talking to boring people in boring places (most of harry potter took place in a fantastic, well lit wizarding school that almost glowed with magic and whimsy. where does this take place? the grey-ist paris streets they could find!). and worst of all, the climax was so anti climatic, that when the credits started rolling, and I realized there was gonna be a sequel, I was stunned, because what was supposed to be an action packed climax was so UNDER CLIMACTIC, that I thought it was just more build up! if they cut all the meaningless scenes, characters and side plots, this movie would have been an hour long at best, instead of the 2 hour snooze fest I endured. and hey, maybe then you wouldn't need a sequel! because with all that unused time, you could: develop the characters you already have, show us grindelwald doing something cool, which spoiler alert, he doesn't. his entire goal in the movie was basically to run a political campaign. what if grindelwald did something like, I don't know, march into the ministry of magic and stage a wizard coup? that would be fun, and also a climax.
However, with all that said, this movie isn't bad. it's boring, but not bad. however, to me, a 3/5 is probably the worst rating this movie could get. because in my opinion, there not only is no joy to gain from this movie, but I wouldn't even recommend watching it if you like to watch garbage, like me, because this movie isn't even so bad it's good, it's just another skippable flick.
