Review of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) by Dylan N — 24 Nov 2018
I think this is a very good movie, and the perceived backlash is due to something like 'franchise fatigue.' The pace is admittedly awkward, but Rowling is a writer playing the long game. The entire 'Fantastic Beasts' enterprise might have been better suited to a streaming service.
The first entry is better, but the returning leads are just as likable as before. Jude Law's young Dumbledore is pitch-perfect, and Johnny Depp is remarkably restrained as the titular villain. The trip(s) back to the Hogwarts campus are quite welcome.
In the end, this movie won't win you over to the 'Wizarding World' fictional universe - but if you already feel at home there, this trip will be a fun one.
