Review of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) by Chris V — 19 Nov 2018
This is the exposition film that is clearly setting up for plot lines in the next 3 films. I do not understand the issue that people have with it unless they really just can't handle the density of the woven plot lines. It's not the worst Harry Potter film (Order of the Phoenix is) and yet it's being rated so far below all of them. At the end of the day: Any Wizarding World film > most movies.
Johnny Depp's character loses his European accent to just be British, which is odd. I don't see the need to have kept him when we have tech these days that could transform Jamie Campbell Bower (young Grindelwald) to play himself but older. It's now become watching Johnny Depp play magic characters instead of getting lost in his characters that he used to make magical. Newt is still a perfect being. Tina is still sweet and savvy. Jacob is still hilarious. Creedence got better and less creepy. Queenie's choices were a little hard for me to understand or believe. But Dumbledore was flipping incredible! I was skeptical about Jude Law playing young Dumbledore but he clearly put in a lot of work to mimic Michael Gambon's mannerisms and accent! He was perfect and did not try to steal the show, and in doing so he did just that!
