Without a book to base off of, the storyline for The Crimes of Grindelwald was all over the place. They tried to incorporate a lot of plot twists, that don't really help with the storyline and the some of the character developments did not make any sense at all.

They tried to add in big plot devices that would have probably been mentioned in the original series if it did really happen in the wizarding past. They just took the idea of wizards and ran with it instead of trying to keep the story consistent.
