Review of Fantasia (2004) by Uditha D — 12 Mar 2012
This bold and unprecedented film, easily my favorite Disney movie, combines animated vignettes with symphonic music conducted by the masterful Leopold Stokowski. Fantasia treats viewers to an assortment of elephants, hippos, and gators performing Ponchilli's "Dance of the Hours".
It also features the rise and fall of dinosaurs set to Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" and a calvacade of mythological figures cavorting to Beethoven's sixth symphony. The most famous sequence, however, is Mickey Mouse reenacting Paul Dukas' "The Sorceror's Apprentice".
That, combined with the other pieces, makes Fantasia a film containing some of the best music ever recorded mashed up with animation whose quality has no peer even in the present day.
