Review of Fanny and Alexander (1982) by Jim R — 02 Jun 2007
This movie is what many consider Bergman?s most fully realized work. His fanciful, graceful, magical storytelling is so mesmerizing, that after a while its 3+ hour run time is of no concern. Bergman does such a wonderful and reserved job of introducing us to, and getting us familiar with the secondary characters first, so that when the primary characters are taken away the audience feels as if they too are being taken away.
His hauntingly long takes and tight close-ups allow the audience to experience the characters on a real level, and not pay too much attention to the actual filmmaking itself. This is an absolute masterpiece by Sweeden?s greatest filmmaker.
