Review of Fanny and Alexander (1982) by Ryan K — 06 Jun 2007
This was my first exposure to the work of Ingmar Bergman. Sweden to me was a place where everything could be put together with an allen wrench, as well as a place with good health care. Seeing this movie -ups, downs, and all- made me feel as if I'd revisited a Christmas from my own childhood.
The only thing being, instead of my own selfish take on the holiday (I got the TMNT pizza thrower, only to find it was broken out of the box) but the lives of the other characters, and how they change on that night receives much detail.
It's clear how much of this is anecdotal, and there's almost a curtain that's lifted to show Bergman's existentialist agenda in the room with the puppets.
