Review of Fanny and Alexander (1982) by Yogesh R — 15 Aug 2007
Though the frequently listed running time is 3 1/4 hours, the version I saw was a full FIVE HOURS long, divided into five acts. Of those, only the one involving the bishop-cum-evil stepfather is interesting. And even that was compromised by a lame resolution involving, yup, magic.
I've always disliked Bergman because his films having that nothing do with reality, and this was the clincher: I was drawn in by a compelling storyline with only slightly magically realistic elements, only to have it suddenly trashed by an infusion of pure fantasy.
Lena Olin turns up in a very small role in the final scene; after 5 hours of waiting for her, I was less than impressed.
