Review of Fanny and Alexander (1982) by Jeremy B — 13 Oct 2007
Had Bergman been born 100 years earlier, he would have been the premier novelist of his time. This story - tantamount to Shakespeare and full to the brim with familial love, betrayal, and predominant characterization - is Bergman's crowning achievement in his tradition and his adoration of film.
In two words, it is a personal epic. Its topics are all encompassing - love, hate, family, friendship, sex, God, death, imagination, life, simplicity, and complexity. The characters are brilliantly in-depth. Sven Nykvist's cinematography is ravishing in detail; I could not look away had I even the desire to do so. And, most amazingly, all 5+ hours were written by Bergman himself. It is engrossing. It is beautiful. It is near perfect of its kind.
