Review of Fanny and Alexander (1982) by Jwasu R — 22 Sep 2010
Ingmar bergman is quite possibly one of the the best storytellers in cinema, and Fanny & Alexander is proof of that!
The film is shown through the eyes of two children, Fanny and Alexander (though most of the film is shown through Alexanders perspective) during the early 1900's in Sweden. The film is over three hours long but the events that play through make it seem shorter (at least it was for me).
The first hour and fifteen minutes take place at christmas time as a family gathers together. things take a turn when Alexanders father dies and the mother marries the local bishop (which turns out to be a big mistake) then the family helps save the children and mother from the bishop. the last 45 minutes is absolutely breathtaking and this is a must see for all moviegoers!
This is not Bergmans best film but definetleynumber two in my book. If I were you I would watch this at around christmastime since the first hour take place during christmas. it will really get you into the spirit!
I am glad I saw this film and even better my mom liked it (which is rare because she hates most of the movies I watch).
See this film at all costs!!!!!!!!!!!!
