Review of Fanny and Alexander (1982) by Daniel L — 01 Jul 2013
I recently watched the 5 hour 12 minute television version of Fanny and Alexander and while Bergman preferred that version, I think there is something to be said for the shorter (although still lengthy) theatrical version.
It contains most of the best material and provides a more reasonably-paced narrative. On some grounds, Fanny and Alexander is easily Bergman's best work. The sets, costumes, cinematography, and acting (to the extent I can tell as a non-Swedish speaker) are simply amazing.
But the story is not as engaging as films like Smiles of a Summer Night, Wild Strawberries, or Persona.
