Review of Fanny and Alexander (1982) by Ivan M — 03 May 2012
This review will be my response to the 3-hour version, as I am yet to see the full length, 5-hour TV version, and when I do I will undoubtedly re-review the film. Bergman sure went out with a bang in this, his final theatrical film.
It's one of those films that really did leave me speechless and haunted by it for a long time. Despite the long running time, it plays very well and I did not once lose interest. It is nearly impossible to explain the plot in a nutshell as the story is so broad, with almost every character having an in-depth, three-dimensional story behind them.
Definitely one of Bergman's greatest achievements, it's a true must-see and I cannot stress how mystical, interesting and wonderful it really is.
