Review of Fair Game (2010) by Sun T — 30 May 2011
Wait, this isn't that Cindy Crawford flick where she shows her tits?!
Just kidding. This is a pretty good popcorn drama with Naomi Watts strutting her self all over the screen, pretending to be a CIA agent, but then you look at her ass and realize she's Naomi Watts.
What really struck me about the film was Sean Penn's performance. He proves here that he can play a regular man, a man on a mission, without going to these schtick-y places, which I thought he did in both Mystic River and Milk. Now, I want to see what Penn can do as an older actor, without the personal baggage and wanting to just play "normal" people as opposed to big-name characters he's played in the past.
Otherwise, the film is passable. But things that bothered me: Liman's use of shaky-cam. We get it you did the first Bourne flick, but you didn't do the other two, so get a tripod. Sam Shepard gets top billing, and I love him, but he's in this flick for a grand total of 5 mins. WHAT GIVES?!
Like I said, passable, entertaining, but nothing as revolutionary as its subject/family that would've been better shown through documentary-type footage which we see in the finale and peppered here and there in the film.
