A taught, tense and underplayed thriller that sits very well in the post-September 11 era. Liman avoids a frothing-at-the-mouth liberal performance from Penn that could have ruined this film and turned it into little more than an anti-Bush propaganda piece.
It is much more than that, it is a superbly underplayed narrative of contemporary history.
