Review of Fair Game (2010) by Johnathon W — 28 Mar 2017
Well-crafted but dated political biopic that has aged due to the ultimate facts being revealed. Watts and Penn are excellent in their lead roles and don't set out to make their characters martyrs but flawed human beings.
Penn nicely shows how Joe Wilson's own ego and craving of media attention did more harm than good. Behind the camera, Doug Liman crafts a taunt thriller that, on it's own, works pretty well, but in the hindsight who actually revealed Valerie Plame's work at the CIA (which was Richard Armitage, who only gets a blurb in the credits), the whole narrative becomes undone.
Not a bad film, but a cautionary tale on what happens when the actual history of an event is revealed once the film is made.
