Review of Fahrenheit 451 (2018) by Mel S — 23 May 2018
I thought the movie was well done. Granted I'm a sci-fi fan and a book collector so maybe it hit on a different level for me but the way they presented it I thought was pretty good. People were being killed and having their families destroyed for reading and possessing books because of the knowledge and opinions they contain.
At one point the question gets asked, "Why would the government do this to people?" and the response is, "The government didn't do this, the people demanded it. This is how they want to live.
" Michael Shannon's character then explains how we began banning books because people were offended by their content. He named off every political/activist group out there from conservatives to feminists and which books offended them and why.
This led to the government first banning books and then ultimately burning them so nobody could even have access to their "offensive material." Banning them was not enough because the books were still in existence and accessible to people who sought them out but burning them meant they were gone forever and future generations would never know they existed.
If you can't see the parallel between the culture of 2018 and that message then I'm afraid you are not paying attention. Whether you like the movie or not everyone should be scared by that kind of future.
