Review of Fahrenheit 451 (2018) by Steven C — 07 Oct 2018
Okay, so.
The movie itself was good, it had an interesting plot development and world design I must admit. The problem with that is, the two did not mix. At all.
Now I fear that I may be spoiling the movie here, so I'll be using vague terms first, then actually clarify what I mean and what specifically is bad for those who've seen it or care not about spoilers.
Firstly, as in the summary of the movie, it is about a future in which all books are banned, with three exceptions. We never learn why they are exempt from utter annihilation, but they are. That's my first problem with it. If all books are banned, what makes those three so special?
Then we move on to the characters. The MC is a fireman and his backstory is never elaborated upon, to my regret. Also, he may be a fireman but instead of putting out fires they set illegal books ON fire (the name fireman may make more sense suddenly but I don't care) which seems kind of extreme. The "bad guys" which are actually the good guys, are the ones who harbour the books illegally. My problem with these guys are there master plan is that it's utterly idiotic! But I'll get onto that in the spoilers part.
Thirdly is the ending.. which I can't speak of because spoilers (oh no~~).
Now for my ranting WITH the spoilers!
Now for my first point, I'll have to say it hasn't much to do with the stort of the movie itself or anything, it's just my ranting over those three books. Why Moby Dick? Why The Bible? Why that one book I don't remember but has "lighthouse" in its name? If there are exceptions to a nation changing law, the least they could do is elaborate upon why they are so special. From what I see. One is about killing whales and various aspects of life (I'm currently reading this one, so I can't say much), one is about a lighthouse (I've never read it nor remember its name, fight me) and one is a holy book with various ideas and connotations, some of which are controversial to the plot. I'm not going to act like a bible expert but the bible contradicts modern society a lot, let alone their more restricted society where one can't enjoy a good book.
Point two. So MCs backstory is pretty simple. His dad was part of the eels and he got taken away, no idea why he was fine since the families he caught took their kids to jail with them... (food for thought, hmm?).
Point two b. So the eels' master plan. This has multiple levels of confusing. FOR YOU SEE! Their plan was never to resist the society! No! It was to bring the knowledge of all these books to Canada! And that is my biggest dissapointment in this entire movie. Even more than the ending, and trust you me, my mother heard me sigh in dissapointment from downstairs and asked if I was okay. YA. That happened. But anyways. My tumor of a problem with this plot is why!!!! The one who went through a civil war is the USA, yes? Yes.
The one who suffered from the destruction and necessary societal reforms of the war is the USA l, yes? Yes.
The country that banned books and has only a small supply of them left is the USA, yes? Yes.
Has Canada had any problems that could cause loss of all books? NO!
So America. Went through a civil war. 8 million dead. Still have almost every book. The reason they began destroying these almost every book, never made clear.
Canada. Did not go through a civil war. No deaths from conflict. Do they still have the records of almost every book? Apparently not! Did they happen to be destroying all books? Not said or mentioned but considering how the eels placed hopes on getting these books to Canada, you'd best think not!
Now then. Why... for the sake of all that is good... do they risk their lives to get these books to a country with almost no damage from war, messed up societal reforms and book hating and should, if they're a sane nation! Still have all these books intact! WHYYY!!!
Honestly feel like they're insulting canadians at this point!
*sigh*.
Point three. What the censorship is that ending? I dealt with your pain inducing plot for 1 hour and 30 minutes expecting some kick ass break past the Ameri-canadian border but you just let a bird fly and burn? No fight scene. All the MCs are dead. The bird, I don't even know if it got to Canada, I just saw it flying around... somewhere. Don't even think it went to Canada! Probs buggered off to Japan, Mexico or the Brits considering the huge expanse of water. The MC died. Not that I care. (Prepare for sarcasm) He was a character with great emotional development and backstory that was totally developed and caused people to feel attached to him and his death was definetly a great idea that would enhance the movie. Can you smell the sarcasm?
*sigh*.
All in all. 1 star.
The star is only attributed to the unique idea. The four missing stars are because this is a terrible movie.
