Review of Factotum (2005) by Roger A — 03 Jan 2010
Shunned by academic types and looked down on by polite society - Charles Bukowski is a writer you either love or hate. Being a young and easilly impressed guy I love ol' Hank (Someone actually told me once that Bukowski only appeals to the young and eassily impressed, such elitist bullshit coming from someone who thinks JD Salinger is as edgy as it get's). Bukowski is hugly popular in parts of Europe, and it comes as no suprise that someone like Norwegian director Bent Hamer would be the one to direct this movie. This is not a page by page adaptation, and it sereves the movie well. I prefer Matt Dillon's take on Henry Chinaski to Mickey Rourke's humpback loudmouth approach in Barbet Schroeder 1987 movie "Barfly". Dillon is calmer, more brooding and I think he is perfect for the part.
I'm not sure what people unfamiliar with the writings of Charles Bukowski will think about this movie. But who cares? It's not for them anyway.
