Review of Factotum (2005) by Marti M — 20 Aug 2006
Matt Dillon (Hank) gives a fabulous performance as a drifter, as the title suggests. He plays someone who is no-good and yet too good for the world he lives in. He trudges along at dead-end job after job sabotaging himself all the way.
He's a slacker and a degenerate, but he has the soul of an artist, a poet, a writer. He claims that the words need to get out of him, and that seems to be his only imperative in his life. I hope I don't make the movie sound like it was depressing, because it was actually quite funny.
Hank's slacker, devil-may-care attitude about life is the trait that gets him to naturally perceive the inherent irony in life, even a life that may seem to be outwardly tragic, in essence.
