Review of Factotum (2005) by Luke P — 09 Dec 2008
Factotum, meaning a man with many jobs. Matt Dillon is a great actor, but he rarely gets to show what he can do. Factotum gives him a great role as Henry Chinaski, a wannabe writer who moves from meaningless job to meaningless job, in a pickle factory, cleaning statues, boxing shoes, all the while indulging in his loves of women, booze and gambling.
The film is a shambling effort, much like the life of it's main character, characters come and go, scenarios start and end, never settling in one place. While this film has moments that I enjoyed, it found it to be too cold and alienating an experience.
Perhaps that's the point, but it didn't do it for me. In conclusion, Factotum is a film that's easy to admire but difficult to like.
