Review of F for Fake (1973) by Todd S — 26 Jul 2008
Ostensibly about art forger Elmyr de Hory, Welles takes documentary footage of Elymr filmed by Clifford Irving (who himself forged an autobiography of Howard Huges) as a starting off point for his own meditations on the relationship between art and artifice.
Frenetically edited and gloriously preposterous (the first five minutes is a montage of men letching at Welles' girlfriend as she walks down the street), the film seems to go in every direction but culminates in a profound artistic statement.
