Review of F for Fake (1973) by Five S — 14 Mar 2009
What the hell did Welles make here? Was it a movie, a documentary, a public service announcement, or- as Peter Bodnonavich puts it- an "essay"? We don't really know and we have no reason to care.
This is a brisk, clever, enlightening, entertaining little masterpiece. Is it REALLY about Elmyr de Hory, Clifford Irving, Howard Hughes or Oja Kodar's body? Not at all; it's just pretending to be.
What you have here, folks, is the greatest con ever pulled off in cinema... and Orson Welles was the mastermind behind it. Bravo.
