Review of Eyes Without a Face (1960) by Zoran S — 13 Sep 2008
This is one of those weirdly beautiful and strangely poetic films that, after having seeing hundreds of movies a year, you do not understand how it was not already part of your mental archive of film images.
Even after one screening-- and only on dvd, not even projected in 35mm the format in which its crisp black and white photography demands to be seenâ??it is likely the large portions of the film will stick with me.
Itâ??s not simply the stunning cinematography of Eyes Without a Face that have left an impression with me. Even more so, the peculiar tone of the film-- a bizarre mix of morbid comedy, grotesque surgery footage, and melancholy melodramaâ??is difficult to forget.
The ending sequence, which I will not give away, is both truly perfect and truly odd.
