Review of Eyes Wide Shut (1999) by Justin M — 16 Apr 2012
Many people dismiss this final work from Stanley Kubrick as.. well not up to his standards of filmmaking. While I thought it was an excellent and fascinating study of the domesticity of married life in contemporary America.
Yeah. the orgy scene is a bit over the top and elaborate.. And..I can admit this seems like a film any director COULD have done, but.. they didn't. While its not as towering as say 2001.. or A Clockwork Orange.
. this is more intimate filmmaking that definitely still has his Master's touch.. and one of Cruise's better performances. The trouble making the film is almost LEGENDARY.. but I rank it quite high on my Kubrick list.
. maybe not in my top 100 ever.. but then again it might just squeak in on just how endlessly fascinating the characters are.
