Review of Eyes Wide Shut (1999) by Ray H — 07 Jul 2010
A good flic. Afterwards, I noticed the runtime of abt 3 hrs. I did not realize the film length as the story unfolded. So, the story held my interest. Early on, there are various shots of beautiful naked or semi-naked women; here & there. Nicole Kidman and/or her body-double are utilized to great effect. A sexually charged atmosphere is set for the film. Cruise (Dr Bill Harford) & his wife, Alice (Nicole Kidman) are a wealthy New York couple. Although, they dont seem to have any marital conflicts, including sexual compatibility; Alice admits to a sexual fantasy abt some stranger. Bill gets bent abt this revelation. When opportunities for sexual adventure present themselves, he is now tempted. It does not seem he was before.
He pursues an opportunity to attend some hidden, cult-like sexual orgy group; composed of the super-wealthy. Here we have super-wealthy men (mostly), apparently taking advantage of drug-adled, yet very beautiful, prostitutes. Some of whom, are still working the streets?? ... I dont think so. Apparently, these folks are from some distant planet that has not heard of HIV, HPV, etc, & etc.
The sets & costuming are gorgeous to behold. The cinematography is fabulous.
There isnt much character development explored here. And, there isnt much commentary on the human condition; save the wish for sexual exploration/experimentation. But, we already knew that.
