Review of Eyes Wide Shut (1999) by Domas R — 30 Nov 2010
Stanley Kubrick is in my opinionthe greatest director of all time. Also he is probably the most underrated director of all tome too. Eyes Wide Shut is undoubtly another masterpiece which deals with humans nature and loyalty.
I think that I don't need to tell that cinematography and overall technical craftsmanship is outstanding. I know that those years where probably one of the best in history of cinema, but this flim really needed at least nomination for cinematography and direction. The way I like about Stanley's films is that he uses minimum dramatization and that increases the reality of film. And it lets the viewer to analyze the situatoin. In other words Stanley Kubrick never implements his own thoughts directly he lets the viewer to to this. And that is amazing.
Also Tom Cruise was robbed too. He really needed at least nomination. His character is one of my favourites. It was very interesting to observe him and his actions. He seemed as a good loyal guy who can help, but in here he confronts with unloalty and that leads him to self exploration. Whole films atmosphere is bassicaly an inner mental state of Dr. Bill. Cruise portrayal of Dr. Bill is one of my favourite performances of all time.
And I can't figure out why the film hadn't gotten much accolades. I haven't seen any film that would deal with such themes as human nature and laylity without being overdramatisized. This film really makes you think and gives more questions than answers. As I know this film was made because Kubrick couldn't understand why so many of his friends were getting divorced and married again and again. If I would have a friend who would be cheating on his wife I would suggest him to watch him this film. It really makes you think.
Eyes Wide Shut is another underrated gem from Stanley Kubrick. The themes of this film weren't touched so proffesionally and maserfully before and afterwards. This is one of the best films which deals with humans psyche and nature. Gratuitously underrated masterpiece.
