Review of Eyes Wide Shut (1999) by Tero T — 24 Nov 2011

I don't get how this movie ever made it to the big screen other than the fact that it had a star cast and director. I remember the trailers teasing that we would see the then married Tom and Nicole in totally nude sex scenes (well, thats what hooked me anyway) and thats originally why I went to see it.

I can sum up this long, painful and boring movie in a few sentences in order to save people's time who have not yet seen it. Ritch married couple have reached the point in their relationship where the spark is gone.

Wife reveals to husband a fantasy she once had about a sailor while they smoke dope in the bedroom. Husband becomes ridiculously obsessed with this revelation and makes it his goal to get back at his wife by cheating on her.

He tries a prostitute, alas his conscience saves him. He tries a bar, no luck. He hires a costume and tries an elite top secret party where everyone wears masks and has sex with random women. He then gets caught, somehow stumbles upon a murder cover up but gets away with a slap on the wrist.

He sheepishly reveals all events to his wife who gets upset and the last line of the movie is Nicole Kidman saying 'Fuck'. The end. I really hated this movie. There was nothing artsy about it.

The story was simple yet boringly dragged out. I wouldn't waste my time. Oh, and you don't even get to see the A list actors naked or in a proper sex scene so if you're going just for that, don't waste your time.
