Review of Eye in the Sky (2007) by Antony O — 19 May 2016
Probably the most tense film watching other people watching screens! Iâ??m no military expert (no, really Iâ??m not) but this film just felt very â??realâ?? and authentic. Helen Mirrenâ??s colonel is tasked with over-seeing a drone team, with a view to capturing some high-profile terrorists in Kenya.
This is until a young girl enters the zone throwing a spanner in the works. Moral, legal and political arguments ensue. Do they attack and risk the innocent girl being killed? Or do they wait and potentially lose their targets - who could then go on to kills hundreds of civilians? It almost didnâ??t feel like a movie, more like we were taking part in a real-life predicament.
Thereâ??s no major characterisation (although the acting is excellent throughout), just real people dealing with whatâ??s before them. Aaron Paul was entirely convincing as the drone pilot whoâ??s emotionally compromised and Alan Rickman was given a bittersweet send off in what happened to be his final film.
He also has the best line in the film. Fitting.
