Review of Extract (2009) by Olive M — 19 Apr 2013
I don't see why people didn't like it, except maybe it looks a little low-budget at first. I've always loved Jason Bateman, and I'm glad to see him justify his star quality in a movie, not just on TV; he is destined for still more great things, I hope.
Ben Affleck is almost unrecognizable in this movie, which is funny, because his wife Jennifer Garner at about the same time made an equally cute movie with a one-word title about a foodstuff, and in which she played against type.
Kristen Wiig does a very good job playing someone a bit different than she usually does -- she seems to be quite a competent actress, and Mila Kunis, Clifton Collins and everyone else are great. The plot really held together for me and I think maybe the only reason people might have recoiled is because of the fast-and-loose playing with some long and dearly held morals.
But, much as I don't wish to threaten the foundations of our society, this is the present and a lot of this stuff probably really happens and people get over it. I mean, it's nice to see folks not getting too worked up about missteps and deciding to be positive.
Maybe the movie is just a little ahead of its time. But, ultimately, I don't think it damages the fabric of society, and maybe mends it.
