Review of Explorers (1985) by Jason Z — 23 Nov 2007
This movie is one of the best examples of the fact that, due to home computers being a fairly new experience in the '80s, and with no one really being sure what computers would be capable of, writers and directors imagined them being able to do amazing things.
The only other prime example that comes to mind is Tron. This mentality allowed for some truly great scenarios. Too bad this movie didn't exactly follow through. It starts out promising, looking to become really great.
Somewhere in the last half of the movie, it just goes corny and nearly falls apart. It's unfortunate, but what appears to have happened is that the writer(s) had a great idea for the journey these kids would make, but didn't really know what to do with the story, once they got there.
It doesn't end sour, the kids get back to their lives, forever changed, all having a shared secret. In the end I would say that it is good, almost-solid fun. One to leave you daydreaming, and missing that creativity that didn't require explanation, once upon a time.
