Review of Excalibur (1981) by Ryan L — 07 Mar 2008
Sorry to say this, but what a poor version of King Arthur's story! Hard to watch even half of it.
Acting is embarrassing, so is dialog and entire composition. "Young".
Arthur looks like a clueless "toodo", Merlin more like a pocket thief from a "Xena" show.
Fighting scenes look like hobby:knights that go to county side and play medieval war with bunch of their buddies.
Not to mention just plain clumsy.
Soundtrack... it makes it all even worse. The bigger, and also more commercial, musical masterpieces have been attached to some scenes to lift them, but instead it makes it all even worse. Sad.
And come on, you never KISS the blade of any sword! Not even touch it with your bare fingers!
Just one of many very obvious flaws.
As movie proceeds, it does get bit better (or one just gets used to not to expect too much) therefore I give 2 stars instead of 1 here.
I don't want to say things like that easily about a movie... but it doesn't leave me much choice.
