Review of Excalibur (1981) by Jon B — 17 Aug 2009
If you're a fan of the initial legend from the books and stories more than any of the hundreds of adaptations of it, then this movie - made in 1981 - is STILL as close as you're going to get to the real thing.
The tale is all-out fantasy rather than historical fiction like more recent Aurthur films. Though Aurthurian legend has become a compilation of ideas from various authors, all the memorable staples we're familiar with are perfectly depicted in this film: The drawing of the sword from the stone, the formation of Camelot and the Round Table, Guinevere and Lancelot's affair, the quest for the Holy Grail and the final battle against the treacherous Modred.
Alll the actors portray their characters with considerable drive and emotion to support the story, but Nicol Williamson leads the pack as the musing sorcerer, Merlin, with some of the best lines in the movie.
