Review of Excalibur (1981) by David J — 25 Aug 2009
It's a shame this movie is so horribly dated, because it's probably the best film version of the Arthurian legend to date. It certainly puts the medieval grit back in the story, which had been scrubbed lily white by the Victorians.
Unfortunately, a few good sequences--such as the renewed Arthur's ride to battle to the strains of "O Fortuna" and Arthur's final scenes--can't make up for the bad special effects, hokey '80s cinematography, and questionable acting.
The story is also pretty unwieldy, gallumphing along from episode to episode. Somewhere in here there's a six-hour movie fighting to get out.
