Review of Excalibur (1981) by Patrick B — 17 May 2010
There have been many tellings of the legend of King Arthur, but this one has to be one of the worst adaptations around. The dialogue flips back and forth from hokey to dull, and Boorman always seems to want to rush along the story.
Nothing ever feels cohesive. It's like Boorman is playing the "Best of the King Arthur Legend" clips. And for the most part, the actors seem like they just to below their lines like they're in some grand Shakespearean play.
The only bright spot here is Helen Mirren who plays the devilish Morgana with a seductive ease. If I want to see a hokey retelling of the legend of King Arthur, I'll stick with "Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
