Review of Excalibur (1981) by Alex A — 07 Dec 2013
The visuals at times are striking and demict a bold fantasy tale, but the film really is all over the place from a narrative perspective and one that could have used some cutting in places. There are some good performances by many talented actors but the hazy and dream-like quality of the film is both it's strength in parts but it's weakness in others.
The film is dead serious in tone and earns it's R rating with several scenes of nudity and sexual content many of which are done in symbolic ways and depict the brutality of the story. The latter half of the film especially is dragged out for too long and the ending takes it's time to settle the story.
This being said there were some elements to like but not enough positives to makeup for the negatives in my opinion.
