Review of Excalibur (1981) by Richard O — 11 Jul 2009
This film is a masterpiece is so many ways. I joined this site to give my opinion on this more than any other filme. It's always been a pleasure of mine to watch this on a lazy sunday afternoon. Are their faults?, some would argue that there is over acting, but the theatre style approach of many of the main characters works well, and helps take you to a different world.
The cast is phenomenal, only Nigel Terry as King Arthur struggled to make his mark in further films, and yet I always feel he works well in the role. The Grail quest is spot on. It may be lengthy, but it is spellbinding nad works very well in the film.
There are also lots of touches throughtout the film that help take your mind to a mysterious time, such as the great music score, the witchcraft, the armour such as Mordreds scary gold set(yes plate armour was later, but who cars) As a final aside, I always wonder whether there was a slight issue with money at the end of the film, as the final battle is shot in a lot of smoke, which you feel might have been better with a few hundred more extras? Amazing film for the time.
