Review of Exam (2009) by Steve G — 21 Jan 2011
A true masterclass in dialogue based, character driven tension building. 8 candidates left in an exam room, forbiddon to leave, spoil their paper (deliberately or accidentally), or communicate with the invigilator or guard in any way and with 80 minutes to deliver the one answer required.
The fact that Exam is done practically in real time yet never drags for a moment is an achievment in itself, and its all down to a brilliantly simple concept, fleshed out into a gripping scenario.
The fact that the cast are all virtual unknowns only heightens the experience, you cannot start to second guess who might be the victor, as soon as you do they'll be disqualified and ejected. It is also fair to mention that the cast give gripping performances, Luke Mably and Jimi Mistry in particular whilst the most recognisable face is invigilator Colin Salmon, who suits the role right down to the ground - the casting director deserves a medal.
The defining part of Exam was always going to be how it was rounded off, and thankfully, unlike some independent films, the time is taken to decide a winner and give an explination that flips the whole thing around - the answer being so devilishly simple you are almost guaranteed to have missed it.
Cannot recommend this highly enough.
