Review of Ex Machina (2015) by John K — 13 Sep 2015
It's wonderful to see a sci-fi film like Ex-Machina that puts plot, concept and story first, ahead of special effects and mindless action. Garland does well to take the now well-tread path of cybernetics and artificial intelligence and yet instil some wonder, suspense and surprise.
The cinematography is breath-taking and Garland's literary origins help delivery some sparky dialogue. Yet at the same time these literary roots also undermine the movie's pace; too often for me the pondering vistas and dialogue heavy scenes made the film drag.
Although the cast are all exemplary there is scarce character development (which was surprising) although as the twists unravel the pace does pick up in the final act. As clever as it was, the film never rises above its initial concept, making Ex-Machina feel little more than an extra long episode of The Outer Limits, albeit a well executed one.
