Review of Evita (2009) by Jc E — 02 Oct 2007
The film, overall, is a decent picture. My one withdrawal, besides the in-dier-need-of-editing length, the melodramatic beginning and end of the film held way too much overbearing emotion for me. Don't get me wrong- I'm a sucker for melodrama- but I don't think it was the best idea to open and close the film this way if the characters are not to be developed enough to where the audience feels a connection.
Now, casting wise- everything was absolutely pitch perfect. Madonna did a fantastic job. Antonio Banderas' character felt unnecessary for me, but he played the part well regardless. Overall, Evita is certainly not one of my favorite musicals.
.. but I am certainly glad I saw it. (i.e.- we'll forget about the stage production I saw...).
