Review of Evita (2009) by Larry W — 22 Jun 2012
The best ALW/Rice movie by far, but a rather schizophrenic film on its own: the soundtrack is a satire (which weirdly and offensively portrays Che Guevara as a defender of democracy,) but Parker's accompanying images don't seem to be in on the joke.
Very strange, coming from the man who gave us The Commitments. Madonna is unnaturally good (for her,) and sings the hell out of it. Banderas projects a presence that eclipses her (and everyone else,) even if he doesn't carry a tune so much as shuffle it along.
Poor Jonathan Pryce, an otherwise very fine actor, mostly blends in the background, playing a fascist dictator like a lonely accountant.
