Review of Evil Dead (2013) by Sean N — 24 Dec 2013
The original Evil Dead is still my all time favorite horror film and I do remember fearing the idea of this being remade. Luckily there was some good effort put into this. It's easily not as great as the original, but that's usually the curse of remakes.
Now on it's one it does do well the convey some old fashion horror. It didn't resort to the cheapest of scares and actually make some horror. It wasn't constant jump scares and at points the camera stayed on the monsters.
Now was it the most terrifying movie, no. This is easily more scarier than many other horror films of the recent times. Also what it delivers was the gore and boy did they go crazy on that. This is thanks to using practical effects and it looks ten times more believable.
There were many points I did cringe at, but some of those times were with the characters and dialogue. Now the original characters from Evil Dead aren't the perfect characters, but I still cared for them.
In this film I couldn't care as much. There is the brother and sister with a bad back story, one man who releases the spirit (he's an idiot), and two female characters that really are there to die.
Even the dialogue got a little iffy like the final one liner at the end. I will say I am very happy that it changed many things as I just knew the original Evil Dead too much that I didn't see the ending coming.
Overall Fede Alvarez did a good job re-telling Evil Dead even if the actual story isn't the best. There were amazing effects and it did it's own thing. The drawbacks to the film easily go to the characters, dialogue, and some of the camera work.
