As someone who never saw the original Evil Dead, I don't have much to compare to. But this remake is one that embraces what it is, nothing but a movie that wants to gross out its audience with excessive gore and disgusting special effects.
In that realm it definitely succeeds, it just isn't the kind of movie that will redefine horror in the least. Looking for some brainless bodily mutilation? Evil Dead is your movie.
