Review of Evil Dead (2013) by Cody M — 11 Oct 2013
Competently made but joyless remake of the low-budget classic that tells the tale of a group of friends who retreat to a cabin in the woods to help one of their members (Jane Levy) kick her drug habit, but things get out of hand when they accidentally summon an ancient evil that proceeds to possess and kill them.
There is not much else to the story, other than buckets of blood and gore galore. Director Fede Alvarez's debut proves he has an eye for the genre, and will probably make a great horror film in the future, but sadly he is done in by his own script which features bland, uninteresting characters and makes no real use of the drug-related setup.
It also takes itself way too serious, draining any hope of capturing the manic energy of the original, leaving behind a rather underwhelming experience. Pointless Bruce Campbell cameo after the credits just reminds the audience what could have been.
