Review of Evil Dead (2013) by Gareth J — 12 Mar 2014
Some nice updated visual effects, an impressive soundtrack and the removal of Raimi's macabre sense of humor does little to elevate this beyond the usual remake territory. Granted, it was nice to try and create a sentimental back story for the two main characters but there was nothing on show here than fans of the original hadn't already seen: and Raimi displayed far more passion and innovation when he pioneered these terrifying moments.
Overall, the new Evil Dead is an unnecessary remake of a franchise which didn't require tampering with. However, it still was more respectful to the source material than either the Nightmare on Elm Street of Friday the 13th remakes, which still guarantees it a higher rating.
