Review of Evil Angels (1988) by The Critic ( — 31 Mar 2013
Centred around one of Australia's most documented and discussed crimes and miscarriage of justice, 'Evil Angels' is a competently produced and consistently intriguing film that focuses on the criminal and legal proceedings, widespread public opinion and the emotional toll on the accused.
Meryl Streep and Sam Neill are solid here as the complex Lindsy and Michael Chamberlain; characters who are not always accessible or even very likeable. But the strength of the story holds tight and it's woven with a genuine sense of care and verisimilitude.
It was released as 'A Cry in the Dark' outside of Australia and New Zealand.
It would not be until 2012 that an inquest, without new evidence, brought up Azaria Chamberlain's divorced parents saw her death officially recorded as the result of wounds inflicted by a dingo.
The story was told again in the well-received made-for-television production 'Through My Eyes: The Lindy Chamberlain Story' (2004) starring Miranda Otto and Craig McLachlan as the Chamberlains.
