Review of Evidence (2011) by Greg T — 10 Apr 2012
I'm a found-footage apologist, I admit it. When they work, they work very well for me. I love THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, really enjoyed ATROCIOUS and think LAKE MUNGO (which doesn't fit comfortably into that sub-genre) is one of the scariest films I've ever seen.
EVIDENCE, though, which I heard many good things about, doesn't cut the mustard for me. The opening scenes, in which four bickering youths go camping in the wilderness, are entirely reminiscent of BLAIR WITCH, and serve to effectively build up a bit of tension as screams rent the night air and some kind of horror lurks in the bushes.
Then, about half of the way in, everything goes to hell, people start running about, the guns come out and the film descends into manic tedium. There are numerous elementary mistakes which would be forgiveable if the bulk of the film was better made, but by the time you get to the end you may feel a little like you've been short-changed.
That said, thankfully it's only 75mins long, though even then it feels like it drags. Not worth the effort, sadly.
