Review of Everything or Nothing (2012) by Jonathan D — 10 Feb 2013
This documentary on the history of the James Bond franchise has three things going for it:
1) access to many key players with a first hand memory of how the novels and movies were made,.
2) a director who just digs his subject, and.
3) lots of Bond. James Bond.
It's a bit of a puff piece told mostly from the perspective of the Broccoli family. Even so, there's a wealth of material here which is is fun to uncover - Ian Fleming's inspiration and personality, the casting of each of the Bonds and Sean Connery's fallout with Broccoli, the history of legal trouble that began with Thunderball, and lots more. If you love Bond, you can't help but love learning about the back stage stuff.
The director peppers the interviews liberally with shots from Bond movies in a way that starts out amusing and gets a little silly. If Pierce Brosnan talks about his first day on the set, you can bet you'll see a clip of Brosnan, as Bond, entering a room and saying something apropos. The message appears to be: for every circumstance in life, there is probably a moment from a Bond movie that echoes it.
It's not deep, but it's irresistible.
